By Vanessa Rocha

It is free and you can meet friends, talk with them, upload your pictures, work, and the best thing: receive money. It is a must. If you do not have it yet you should make one. Facebook is a very easy website to use. You only need an email to start up your account. After this, you have to create a profile with your information and you can start to surf inside.

Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, an ex-Harvard University student, and now it has more than 175 million active users. This is the reason that it is an awesome tool to work on the internet. You can upload advertising, and show your pictures, texts and videos in your profile.

Another interesting thing is that Facebook is an incredible place to meet people who can help you in your professional life, to employ you or simply to make new friends.

( Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook`s founder)

Nowadays, Facebook is becoming common worldwide, too. So, you can’t say that the website is only for Americans anymore. Facebook is similar to Orkut, another famous social networking site, but it is more secure.

Also, you do not need to worry if you do not know English. This powerful website has other language versions, so you can connect and join different communities.

So, what are you waiting for? Put your face in Facebook! Run and see how this website can have awesome functions in your life.

Keep your Chin Up: Stay Positive
A review about Maroon 5’s neo-soul sex appeal album
out of 4

by Vanessa Morais

It Won’t Be Soon Before Long (launched in May 2007 by Octone), is the latest Maroon 5 album and, for sure, their most memorable record. After climbing up the Billboard charts, this last album seems to follow in the shadow of the first album that, even two years after the launch, keeps booming on the radio. However, if you were expecting a flavourless album, you will have an amazing surprise. Maroon 5 (or Kara’s Flowers, for the oldest fans) tried to reinvent their music, and they did an extraordinary job. Beyond this, you can clearly realize their influences inside each track.

The whole record is unique. It makes you dream thru the past by passing thru songs. The first one makes you wake up and remember the 80s and the 90s (if you were alive then, of course). If you want to be more modern, you can listen to the remix, with Rihanna (poor girl), and this duet for sure will make you shake your booty.
Makes Me Wonder” was the first release of the CD for this Los Angeles rock/pop band. With guitar, drum and bass and some synthesizer, this anthem became a hit in the first week on the radio. Continuing the trip, you can remember your past loves, listening to “Goodnight Goodnight” and “Won’t Go Home Without You”. But if you are going thru a breakup I recommend skipping these ballads.

In spite of their obvious influences, Adam Levine (singer) said that this album is more self-confident and powerful lyrically: “…you can dance to it. There is a little more attitude.” However, you can figure out a lot of different influences in each track. This is because they are always working with diverse genres. “Nothing Lasts Forever” reminds me of Steve Wonder, for example, because the soft rhythm, the piano in the background, and because it is the kind of music that you put on the stereo and just let it play, while you drive down an empty road with all the car windows open. Jamiroquai, Sting, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, and even Michael Jackson are some other influences of this pop/rock band.

Despite the obvious influences and some boring songs (it happens in every album, it doesn’t matter who the artist is), the album was received with open arms by critics. Some songs are so dramatic that they can dizzy you, but in such a new pop/rock band it is to be expected.
Allmusic.com gave the album 4.5 stars out of 5 and so did Billboard. For sure you are thinking: what does It Won’t Be Soon Before Long mean? Neither I nor other critics knew what it meant, before the band explained that this title is a sentence to motivate the whole band during the tour. And I think that it motivated not just the band, but all the fans or everyone who listen to this record.

Review: It Won’t Be Soon Before Long

Maroon 5
It Won
t Be Soon Before Long
2007
★★★★☆(4/5)

By Toby Kim

Maroon 5’s last album title is It Wont Be Soon before Long. The album has 12 tracks and 12 bonus tracks. It got good ratings from the critics. Allmusic.com and Billboard.com rated it 4.5 stars out of 5, and they commented that “It is so immaculate.” I think that it’s a reasonable score. This album has many hit singles.

First, I’m going to talk about “Makes Me Wonder.” The song has been released in several countries. It is so melodic and hooky. The first time I heard this song I ignored the lyrics, but the melody was bright and delightful. After I concentrated on the lyrics, it was even more fantastic. It is a criticism about their society or their government policy. I like this type of song. It’s not just a song, it is talking to someone.

Second: “Wake Up Call." This song’s lyrics are so dark and savage. It is about a guy catching his girlfriend with another man, getting revenge, and shooting the other man down. I don’t like this type of lyrics but, this song is probably one of the most famous songs in the album.

Third: “Won’t Go Home Without You.” The song has a smooth and glossy rhythm. This song’s lyrics are especially lovely. I think this song is the best song in this album. This song feels like "Korea-POP" (I'm Korean). That’s why I love this song. People like love songs in autumn and winter.

Adam Levine listened to the Beatles and the Stones and Zeppelin, but he also grew up listening to Prince. So, we can hear their style in Maroon 5’s music, plus his influences are very sexual. His music has a lot of sexual feeling, just like his favorite bands.

In Your Face
You can talk to people on the net universally with rigid security
(By Seiji Takano from PJP)

Do you like to talk to people on the net around the world? I would like to introduce to you such a sophisticated and solidly secure social networking service, “Facebook”. You know what? This website was invented by Mark Zuckerberg of Harvard University, as a sophomore in 2003. Initially he tried to come up with something to do to gain his favorite girl’s heart. Surprisingly, it expanded to University of Stanford, Columbia, and Yale . Do not be so surprised those are the most prestigious universities in the States!

In 2004, PayPal, co-founder, Peter Thiel first invested in “Facebook”. Believe it or not, both Microsoft and Google have already purchased a portion of the company since 2006, offering an estimated $300-500 million. You should not be worried about hackers. It's secure. In 2007, Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing put a huge amount of money, $60 million into this site. You might think that this site could be expensive.

Surprisingly, this site is free, without a doubt. In addition, “Facebook” users are organized by city, workplace, and regions. Compared to the Spacework, the convincing difference is customization that can allow users to send virtual nudges (Pokes) to one another, and also upload photos to their albums. There are a lot of very useful functions:

l Wall
l Photos
l image hosting services such as Photobucket and Flickr
l tag
l "Chat" (instant messaging)
l Blogger

I was really astonished that it was so easy to make your own blog with these functions! Incredibly, you can communicate with your friends and other people all over the world swimmingly and enjoyably. I highly recommend you that you try to "friend" people worldwide. Have fun!!

HELLO!

Hi there. Welcome to the PJP class blog for March 2009!

One of the things we study in our course is internet publishing. For one week, we write blogs, and learn a lot of great techniques to make our writing creative, interesting and informative (and correct! LOL). We also analyze the world of newspapers and magazines.

Savvy readers might notice that including links and lists makes your blog credible and easier to read.

Enjoy reading about Facebook, or reading a review of Maroon 5's latest CD. These are just two of the fantastic, incredible, awesome, superb, magnificent, phenomenal, wonderful, amazing writing projects we have done so far.

The brilliant authors of this blog are:

Some facts about our class:

  • there are only two women named Vanessa in all of Brazil, and they are both taking this course!
  • Seiji is a certified sushi samurai! Watch out, fish!
  • Toby snowboards year-round, whether there is snow or not!
  • The substitute teacher for this class is a talking electronic dictionary!
